an option can be to analyse which parts of a business process managment systems exists. E.g. flow engine, business rules engine, ui framework, business activity monitoring ... The valid questions are:

  1. What is the purpose?
  2. What are the features?
  3. Cat it be obmited?

The best way could be to have a look on some BPMS like from Oracle or IBM and compare them.
