在 Mac 上安装 Python 的最佳方式是使用一键式安装程序Enthought Python Distribution并避免编译时依赖。它有一个可用于 Mac OS X [0] 的 32 位免费版本。Matplotlib和libpng（这似乎是您的依赖项）包含在免费版本 [1] 中。

该文件png.h与libpng一起安装，这是构建matplotlib的要求。

请注意，libpng 的更高版本（1.5 和 1.6 完全不同，并且由于不兼容，1.2 或更高版本的要求规范可能不适合您。我已经成功地将 libpng 1.2 与 matplotlib 一起使用，但没有尝试过最新版本1.6系列。
