NULL和''（空字符串）是不同的东西。一些数据库，比如 MySQL 和显然是 SQLite，允许您将它们视为同一事物，但事实并非如此。''不是有效日期。PostgreSQL 也不接受另一种常见的 MySQL 主义0000-00-00；请注意这一点，以防您习惯将其用作占位符或“无效”值。

您需要修复您的应用程序，以便它发送NULL空日期。我希望将日期设置为应用程序级别的 null/nil 值（Ruby 似乎nil用作它的 null 值）而不是 to""将起到作用。
